Welcome!
Thank you for your interest in the Mewborn name. This tree is an exploration of many of those name holders so I hope it will provide you with the information you seek. If not please let me know why.
This is a family tree for the descendants of Thomas Mewboorn of Bertie Precinct, Albemarle County, North Carolina, who died there and left his will in 1749.
What you will find in here is a one-family study and at the same time a one-name study since the names Mewboorn and Mewborn seem to be exclusive to Thomas and his descendants. However, it is as yet a long way from a full-blown one-name study where all instances of the name are tracked. Nevertheless it is a start. The tree is based on historical source records and what they tell us. References to all the facts used in developing the tree, and where they can be found, are included here. You can chase these sources yourself to verify that the facts are right and that the conclusions as to family structure and descent are correct - or at least reasonable. 'Reasonable' has been added because there are a few places where there simply are very few facts, so some assumptions have had to be made to enable things to be linked up where it seems maybe they should be. Mostly, though, that is not the case and the tree is sound. However, if you find things that may be wrong or conclusions you disagree with please let me know and we'll see if they can be fixed. I'm sure there will also be a few things missing so please let me know about them too and the whole tree can be developed further. One other thing. This is not an attempt, at least at present, at creating a tree for all Mewborns. It covers the first seven generations (occasionally more) of descent from Thomas. That brings things up to about the twentieth century, sometimes well into it. It should be relatively straightforward for modern Mewborns to link themselves in to it with what they know of their immediate ancestors. Again, if that turns out to be a problem please let me know. This tree is likely to be more reliable than many of the smaller Mewborn trees that appear on the web. Most have ben created by starting from the present and working back until some difficulty prevents further progress. Here things have been developed the other way round starting with the first Mewboorn and following the trail of evidence forward in time. Of course that is the line from progenitor, Thomas Mewboorn, and means that this tree does not deal with anyone who may have adopted the Mewborn name at some other time.
